Moose Scoring FAQ
How does moose scoring differ from deer?
Moose carry palmate (paddle-shaped) antlers, so the score measures spread, palm length, palm width, and total point count rather than individual tine lengths and circumferences. The formula rewards mass and surface area, not vertical tine work.
What are the moose subspecies categories?
B&C recognizes three: Alaska-Yukon at 224 all-time minimum (the largest), Canada at 195, and Shiras/Wyoming at 155. Each has separate record books, and scores from one subspecies cannot be compared to another.
What makes a trophy moose?
60-plus inches of spread is impressive on any subspecies. 65-plus inches paired with big palms pushes the score above 200. The world record Alaska-Yukon bull (Crouse, 1994) scored 263 1/2 inches and remains untouched after three decades.
