Whitetail Deer Scoring FAQ

What counts as a typical vs non-typical whitetail?

A typical whitetail has matching tines on both antlers in a predictable pattern (G1-G4). Non-typical racks have abnormal points like drop tines, stickers, split tines, or unmatched points that do not follow the typical pattern.

How do I count points on a whitetail?

Count any projection at least 1 inch long that is longer than it is wide at the base. Beam tips do not count as points. A 10-point buck typically has 5 measurable points per side including the main beam.

What is a good typical whitetail score?

120 inches is a mature, respectable buck for most regions. 140 enters trophy class. 160 qualifies for the B&C Awards Book at the typical minimum, and breaking 170 puts an animal in the all-time records. Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois consistently produce 200-class typicals on private agricultural ground.

Why is inside spread capped at main beam length?

B&C rules state that inside spread credit cannot exceed the length of the longer main beam. This prevents extremely wide but weak-pointed racks from scoring artificially high.
