Mule Deer Scoring FAQ
How does mule deer scoring differ from whitetail?
Tine structure. Mule deer carry bifurcated (forked) tines that split into two points; whitetails carry single points. That changes how G points are measured and adds enough length on a mature muley that scores typically run 20-30 inches above a same-frame whitetail.
What is a good mule deer score?
150 is respectable, 170 is trophy-class, 180 makes the B&C Awards minimum. The all-time typical record from Doug Burris 1972 Colorado buck is 226 3/8 inches — most western draw units never produce a buck within 50 points of that number.
Why do mule deer generally score higher than whitetails?
Wider spreads plus the forked-tine structure adds more length measurements. A 4x4 muley has effectively four tine measurements per side; a 4x4 whitetail has three. That extra measurement adds 20-30 inches on average, before considering the typically larger frame.
