Antler Scoring FAQ

Common questions about Boone & Crockett scoring

How does Boone & Crockett scoring work?

B&C scoring measures main beam length, inside spread, point lengths (G measurements), and circumferences (H measurements). The gross score is the total of all measurements. For typical scoring, deductions are made for asymmetry between left and right antlers and abnormal points. The net score is gross minus deductions.

What's the difference between typical and non-typical scoring?

Typical scoring rewards symmetry - abnormal points (drop tines, stickers, etc.) are subtracted. Non-typical scoring adds abnormal points to the gross score instead of subtracting them, rewarding unique rack character. Choose based on your rack's characteristics.

What qualifies for the Boone & Crockett record book?

Minimum scores vary by species: Whitetail typical 160" (awards) / 170" (all-time), Whitetail non-typical 185" / 195", Mule deer typical 180" / 190", Elk typical 360" / 375". Pope & Young has lower minimums for bow-harvested animals.

How accurate is this calculator compared to an official scorer?

This calculator uses the exact B&C formula, so mathematical accuracy is identical. However, measurement technique matters - official scorers are trained to find the exact smallest circumference and proper measurement points. For official entry, have a certified measurer verify.

Why do I need to wait 60 days before official scoring?

Fresh antlers contain moisture that affects measurements. As antlers dry, they can shrink 1-3%. B&C requires a 60-day drying period so all entries are scored under comparable conditions. You can score immediately for personal reference.

What tools do I need to measure antlers?

You'll need a 1/4-inch flexible steel tape or cable for main beams and points, and a tape or ring for circumferences. For spread, a folding ruler or carpenter's square works well. Always measure to the nearest 1/8 inch.
